What the Standard Measures
02
ASTM E84 — Test Method Overview
ASTM E84 evaluates two surface burning characteristics when a material is exposed to a defined flame source over a 10-minute period in a Steiner tunnel furnace apparatus. Results are expressed as two independent indices.
- Flame Spread Index (FSI)
- Rate at which flame travels across the material surface. Benchmarked against red oak (FSI = 100) and inorganic reinforced cement board (FSI = 0). Lower values indicate slower flame propagation.
- Smoke Developed Index (SDI)
- Cumulative optical density of smoke generated during the test period. Evaluated independently from FSI. Both indices must satisfy the class threshold for classification.
| Class | Flame Spread Index | Smoke Developed Index | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| A — Flexible Natural Stone™ | 0 – 25 | 0 – 450 | Exits, corridors, high-rise, health care |
| B | 26 – 75 | 0 – 450 | General commercial interiors |
| C | 76 – 200 | 0 – 450 | Residential, low-occupancy spaces |
Code Mapping

IBC and NFPA 101 — Where Class A Is Required
The following maps Class A requirements to occupancy types and space conditions under the International Building Code (IBC) and NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. Specifiers must verify the edition adopted by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) and any local amendments in force at the project location.
IBC Section 803 — Interior Wall and Ceiling Finish
| Occupancy / Space | IBC Reference | Required Class |
|---|---|---|
| Egress corridors — all occupancy groups | IBC 803.13 | Class A |
| Vertical exit enclosures (stairwells, exit passageways) | IBC 1023.6 | Class A |
| Assembly occupancies (Groups A-1 through A-5) | IBC 803, Table 803.13 | Class A |
| High-rise buildings | IBC Section 403 | Class A — all interior finish surfaces |
| Institutional occupancies (Group I) — patient rooms, corridors | IBC Table 803.13 | Class A |
| Mercantile and Business (Groups M, B) — corridors and lobbies | IBC Table 803.13 | Class A or B |
NFPA 101 — Life Safety Code, Table 10.2.3.4
| Occupancy / Space | Required Class |
|---|---|
| Exits and exit access corridors — health care, detention, high-rise | Class A |
| Lobbies and common areas — assembly and educational occupancies | Class A |
| Spaces with high occupant load or constrained egress paths | Class A |

Assembly Considerations
05
Fire-Rated Assembly — Specifier Notes
Flexible Natural Stone™ is a surface finish material. It does not constitute a fire-rated assembly independently and must not be specified as a substitute for a rated wall, floor, or ceiling assembly.
The underlying wall assembly — substrate, framing, insulation — must independently satisfy any required fire-resistance rating (1-hour, 2-hour, etc.) per IBC Chapter 7 or applicable UL assembly listings. The finish material is applied over a compliant assembly, not in place of one.
Adhesive selection should be reviewed for compatibility with the fire-rated assembly. Consult the structural engineer of record (SER) or fire protection engineer (FPE) where required by the project scope or AHJ.
Penetrations through fire-rated assemblies must be firestopped per IBC Section 714, independent of the finish material applied to the assembly face.
