Technical answers about Flexible Natural Stone™ — the material, the system, and how it performs in real projects.
The Material
01
What is Flexible Natural Stone™?
A modified inorganic powder composite building material — classified as MCM Flexi Clay — composed of kaolin (50–56%), quartz (42–47.5%), and polymer binders. It is manufactured into thin, flexible panels that bond to standard construction substrates using adhesive. Not a quarried slab, laminate, or printed surface. Its stone appearance derives from its mineral composition — over 97% inorganic by weight.
02
How does it differ from traditional stone?
Conventional stone requires structural reinforcement, cranes, masons, extended cure times, and multiple finishing trades. Flexible Natural Stone™ eliminates all of it. Two requirements: a firm, stable, NBC-compliant substrate and an appropriate adhesive. Apply adhesive, bond the stone, allow to cure. No taping, mudding, sanding, priming, or paint finish required.
03
How much lighter is it compared to natural stone?
Up to 80% lighter than conventional stone slabs. Standard tools and polymer adhesive replace crane, mason, and structural reinforcement. Labour time is reduced, jobsite disruption is minimized, and project costs are lower — without compromising the authentic stone aesthetic.
04
Can it be used on curved surfaces?
Yes — with a specific directional constraint. Flexible Natural Stone™ Panels flex along their length only. For example, a 4 ft × 2 ft panel will bend along the 4 ft dimension — conforming to columns, curved walls, and arches. It does not bend across its width. This makes it well-suited for vertically or horizontally curved architectural surfaces where the curve runs parallel to the panel’s long axis. Minimum bend radius should be confirmed with the project team prior to specification.
05
Is it suitable for Canadian climates?
Yes. UV-stable and rated for all-weather exterior use. The mineral composition — kaolin and quartz — does not degrade under UV exposure. When installed with the recommended adhesive system, the material maintains structural integrity and appearance through freeze-thaw cycles and seasonal temperature fluctuations typical of Canadian regions.
Installation & Compliance
06
What surfaces can it be applied to?
Flexible Natural Stone™ bonds to all standard construction substrates — drywall, concrete, masonry, cement board, and over stable existing cladding. The substrate must be firm, stable, and NBC-compliant. Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of contaminants. Wet environments require a waterproofing membrane prior to installation.
07
What are the substrate requirements?
The substrate must be structurally sound, free of flex, and NBC-compliant. No taping, mudding, sanding, priming, or paint finish is required before installation. Framing must be adequately reinforced and braced with surface deflection minimized. Flexible Natural Stone™ Panel layout — staggered or seamless butt-joint — is a design choice, not a structural requirement. Flexible stone seams do not need to align with substrate joints.
08
Does it meet fire safety standards?
Yes. ASTM E84 Class A fire-rated. EU Class A compliant. The material is non-flammable — inorganic mineral composition will not burn or support combustion. Certification documentation is available upon request for specification and permitting purposes.
09
Can it be used for fireplace surrounds?
Flexible Natural Stone™ may be specified for decorative electric fireplace surrounds where manufacturer-required clearances are maintained, appliance installation instructions are followed, and local code requirements are satisfied. The decorative finish material does not alter or reduce required appliance clearances. Gas and wood-burning applications require review by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
10
Where can I find full installation details?
The complete system — assembly stack, substrate preparation, cutting methods, adhesive selection, and what to avoid — is documented in the Installation Guide →
Programs & Purchasing
11
What is the Trade20 Program?
A verified trade pricing program available to qualified contractors, builders, designers, architects, developers, and industry professionals. Eligible members receive up to 20% trade pricing, project support, material estimating assistance, sample access, and priority service for active projects. Contact us directly to apply.
